East Dallas – Last week, the clubhouse at The Trails Apartment was decked out in all pink as Dallas United Crew’s PINK Breast Cancer Survivor dragon boat team welcomed new members and hosted the kick-off to their third race season.  What makes this season different than the rest? This season, the team plans to race this summer in Florence, Italy in the International BCS Dragon Boat Festival!

To help raise funds for the trip, the PINK team partnered with local entrepreneur Tony Palmer, founder of TropicSport mineral sunscreen and skin care, which launched earlier this year.   Tony was on hand to present the team a check to the team that will go towards the team’s Italy trip. Funds were raised through TropicSport’s affinity program that donates proceeds back to non-profits and local community organizations.

“I'm thrilled to have a part in making your trip possible. You are an inspiration of what survivorship looks like.”  Palmer told the team.  As he continued, there was an emotional moment when he shared his personal cancer journey for the first time publically,  “As a lymphoma survivor myself, I know what is it is like to have a doctor tell you,  ‘you have six months to live’.  I’m in full remission now, yet I was concerned about negative impact that chemical sunscreens can have on the planet and people. That was a big inspiration for starting TropicSport.”

“I think it was a surprise to all of us,” says Debbie Kehoe, PINK paddler and 22-year survivor.  “I had no idea that the active chemicals in mainstream sunscreen were so harmful to the reefs and marine life.  What’s really scary is that these chemicals are also hormone disruptors creating havoc on our bodies and enabling cancer to grow,” Kehoe explained. “We’re grateful to partner with Tony and TropicSport because it helps us in more ways than one – helps us raise funds, but more importantly no harsh active chemicals!”

Dallas United PINK dragon boat practices are in full swing getting ready for the upcoming racing season.  The team will be heading to Florence, Italy in just a few months.  If you are a survivor or know someone who is, Dallas United PINK is for you! Come join us on White Rock Lake and don’t forget to wear your sunscreen!

Dallas United Crew Men's Varsity 8 (L to R) Coxswain Ava Craycroft; Rowers: Anthony Wang, Hunter Adams, Eric Martin, Ben Genender, Anson Smith, Nik Knapp, Kristoff Csaky and Anders Ekstrom
Dallas United Crew (DUC) Varsity Men raced in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct 22 in Cambridge, MA. The Head Of The Charles Regatta is the world’s largest two-day rowing event. More than 11,000 athletes from around the world compete in 55 different race events. Boats compete against one another and the clock, which starts sequentially, approximately fifteen seconds apart.

DUC Varsity Men's 8 crew placed 21st out of 85 crews from around the country and the world. “This year’s crew was young with only two seniors and six underclassmen – four juniors, one sophomore and one freshmen,” says Program Director Steve Perry. “Five of these rowers and our coxswain raced in this event for their first time. This race is known for it's winding course, bridges and treacherous turns. It’s a testament to the crew and our coxswain Ava Craycroft, a sophomore, to have navigated skillfully through this challenging course. ” says Perry.   Dallas United Crew continues to gain attention on the international stage moving up in the standings for the last three years.  DUC's Men's Varsity boat earned their invitation to race again in 2018, an impressive accomplishment for these young athletes.

Congratulations to DUC’s Men’s Varsity 8 representing six Dallas high schools: Anders Ekstrom, Kristoff Csaky, Nik Knapp, Anson Smith, Ben Genender, Eric Martin, Hunter Adams, Anthony Wang and coxswain Ava Craycroft.

Dallas United PINK Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Team

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dallas United PINK is proud to announce that they will be representing North Texas in the International Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Festival in Florence, Italy, July 6-8, 2018.  This incredible event happens every four years with over 2,400 survivors and 120 crews from around the world. Dragon Boating has been proven to aid in the post surgery recovery program for breast cancer patients.

Many in the Dallas area have never heard of dragon boating.  Dragon boats are 22-person canoes that originated in China approximately 2,000 years ago. The boats consist of 20 paddlers, one steersperson and one drummer.  Newcomer Vickie Johnson, survivor and RN nurse navigator, was excited to find something different.  “So, why am I a part of Dallas United PINK? I didn’t want to walk or run, but paddle? That was something totally different! We turn awareness into action every time we step into our boat, set up and paddle. We paddle to prove to ourselves we are strong again. We paddle to prove to our breast cancer sisters, there is life after your diagnosis.  We paddle because we simply want to win the race!”

To create awareness for breast cancer and celebrate survivorship, PINK paddlers are hosting a Community Paddle Party on October 21 at White Rock Lake.  Come paddle with us whether you’re a breast cancer survivor or simply want to try something new!

Date: October 21st

Where: 417 E. Lawther Road at White Rock Lake

Time: 10a – 1pm

DUC's Drake Deuel Wins Silver Medal Drake also holds six indoor world records and is 2016 Indoor Rowing World Champ

Dallas United Crew - The sport of rowing tends to be dominated by coastal teams in the Northeast and the West. Yet, believe it or not - Dallas United Crew, rowing from White Rock Lake, sent four boats to the USRowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota, FL last weekend. It was a Texas-sized record of 27 high school men and women racing, more than any other team in the state of Texas. This is the first time in Dallas that a team has sent four boats to Nationals representing both men and women’s divisions - Women’s Varsity 8+, Women’s Lightweight 8+, Men’s Varsity 8+ and Men’s single.

Overall, it’s a relatively young group of rowers and coxswains - many of these rowers have only been rowing for a few years. It’s great testament to their strength, power and dedication to compete at a national level. These athletes have a rigorous practice schedule – six days a week, with two a days leading up to Nationals.  “Our athletes had a strong showing on the national stage this year, and many of our seniors will be continuing their rowing careers at top ranked schools across the country”, says Men’s Head Coach Randy Dam.

DUC Men’s Single Brings Home the Silver Medal

  • Drake Deuel, a 2017 graduate of Highland Park High School, won a silver medal in the Men's single.  While Drake has been rowing for four years, this year was his first year to race in a single. Incredible to now be the second fastest in the country! Drake is the 2016 World Indoor Rowing Champion and holds six world records on the indoor rowing machine. Drake will attend Harvard this fall to continue his rowing career

DUC Men’s Varsity 8+ Ranks 13th in the Nation

  • They raced in a hard-fought competition becoming the 13th fastest in the country.  They were edged out of the semifinals in a photo finish with mere .2 seconds separating the competition.  The crew was comprised of six seniors, two juniors and one sophomore representing four high schools - Highland Park, Science & Engineering Magnet, Bishop Lynch and St. Marks.  Eric Martin, a sophomore, along with David Slear, a senior rowing with Princeton next fall, were selected to attend the prestigious USRowing selection camp for the chance to row with TEAM USA later this summer.

DUC Women’s Lightweight 8+ Ranks 21st in the Nation

  • This boat is a relatively young boat with four seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and one freshman representing Bishop Lynch, Highland Park and Hockaday.   It was a special race for two of these ladies – the Wellborn sisters - Mimi, a senior, at stroke seat and Georgia, a freshman, at bow seat; they were the bookends of the boat! Rowing is a family affair at the Wellborn house!

Women’s Varsity 8+ Ranks 22nd in the Nation

  • This boat is a very young boat by national standards with two freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and four seniors representing five area high schools – Woodrow Wilson, Bishop Lynch, Highland Park, Hockaday and Ursuline. Incredible accomplishments for these ladies as many were racing on the national stage for the first time! Rachel Craycroft, a sophomore, was selected to attend USRowing High Performance Camp and Gracie Condon, a freshman, was selected to attend USRowing Development Camp. Seniors, Kate Hettrick and Cecelia Manganello will be continuing their rowing in college at University of Texas and Bucknell University.

“Of the 27 DUC student athletes that qualified and competed in Youth Nationals Competition this year, 15 are underclassmen who will be returning to DUC’s program in the fall,” according to DUC Women’s Head Coach Rebecca George.  “We look forward to this coming season as we have a strong bench of talent returning to the team!”

Stay tuned as fall racing resumes in September and these rowers get back to competition, building on all that they learned about themselves and their sport from their experience at Nationals.
