Texas Womans University Hosts Free BALANCE Docuseries Screenings and Panels

A new docuseries produced by a North Texas researcher and Texas Womans University alumna is helping bring long-overdue visibility to perimenopausean experience that affects every woman, yet historically receives limited attention in research, education and public conversation.

Texas Womans will host a series of free public screenings of BALANCE: A Perimenopause Journey across its campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston this spring, each followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A featuring experts in womens health. View the BALANCE trailer.

Monks dont typically come to mind when talking about menopause. But in BALANCE, filmmakers Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sadhvi Anubhutimillennial Jain monks based in North Texasset out to better understand their own experiences with perimenopause, thus launching a journey that uncovers a broader story about the origins of menopause misinformation, gaps in womens midlife care, and the need for more open, informed conversations.

Produced by researcher, advocate and TWU alumna Stephanie Collins, the four-part docuseries blends personal storytelling with expert insight, exploring symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia and fatigue, while examining the historical and cultural factors that have shaped how menopause is understood and treated. The series is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, and has drawn national attention and support from high-profile health care experts and Alyssa Milano, who serves as an executive producer.

A highlight of each TWU event will be a panel discussion and audience Q&A moderated by Collins, which will offer an intriguing opportunity for a post-viewing conversation and extended dialogue about womens health. Joining the conversation will be Dr. Sarah Berg, a nationally-noted obstetrician-gynecologist and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner who specializes in midlife womens health and advances menopause education through speaking, writing and digital learning initiatives, including Selfority, a menopause information platform.

Menopause is something every woman will experience, yet for centuries its been pushed into the shadows, Collins said. Im proud to be part of the growing dialogue bringing this issue into the light and the effort to help women better understand their options. As a TWU alumna, its especially meaningful to bring BALANCE to my own universityan institution committed to the idea that when you educate a woman, you empower the world. That belief is at the heart of this project, which is about giving women the knowledge they need to take control of their menopause journey.

Jaime Porter, TWUs interim vice president for university advancement, said the screenings reflect TWUs commitment to advancing conversations that impact health care, as well as the universitys continued investment in womens health research.

Texas Womans is currently exploring a proposal to expand its Institute for Womens Health, with a focus on advancing research related to perimenopause and midlife health. The planning effort, led by a team that included Collins and supported by a grant from the Texas Womens Foundation, would further position TWU as a leader in addressing critical gaps in womens health.

Were excited that Texas Womans is taking part in this growing conversation, and delighted by the opportunity to celebrate the work of one of our alumnae, Porter said. Almost 90 percent of our students are women and nearly half of our students pursue careers in health care, so this is an issue that directly connects to our mission. These events offer a valuable opportunity for our community to engage with the topic and participate in thoughtful panel discussions with experts in the field.

Stephanie Collins, RN, BSN, BCPA, is a womens health executive with more than three decades of experience in life sciences spanning clinical, commercial and patient advocacy roles. She is co-founder and chief patient officer of Eido Bio, where she leads efforts to develop therapies designed specifically for women, with a focus on addressing hormonal decline and improving the patient experience.

A graduate of the Texas Womans University College of Nursing, Collins began her career as a nurse and is a board-certified patient advocate. The plot moves quickly with its exciting mix of fiction and historical facts and figures. Readers get a look at the realities of President Roosevelt's Executive Order regarding Japanese-Americans, the simultaneous infiltration of Nazi sympathizers into potentially critical positions during wartime, anti-Semitism, and the impact of society's views on gays and lesbians. The look and feel of early 1940s Hollywood is uncanny, and the frequent cameos of the era's big names are a surprise and delight.

I recommend ROUND UP THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS to readers of historical cozy mysteries, especially those who enjoy 1940s wartime films.

Outstanding coming-of-age story set in 1920s Oklahoma City.

Thea by Genevieve Morrissey is the outstanding coming-of-age story of Thea Carter, set in the mid-1920s in Oklahoma City, and, combined with Nicole Fikes's audiobook narration, perfectly captures her struggles, triumphs, time, and place. All 15-year-old Thea wants is a little stability in her life, the chance to get her high school diploma, and her troubled mother to stop drinking.

As the housekeeper to Dr. Hallam, a new physician in town, Thea's mother not only receives a salary but also a separate, self-contained, private apartment over the garage, where young Thea can secretly reside, out of her employer's sight. Unfortunately, her mother's frequent benders put all this in jeopardy, so Thea does her best to pick up the slack while hiding in the background so Dr. Hallam doesn't give her mother the boot. As Thea juggles her home life and schoolwork, she excels at school and, as time goes on, is accepted by the close-knit group of students and catches the eye of popular, smart Homer. But when her part in the smooth running of his household is discovered by Dr. Hallam, rather than seeing Thea as an unwanted burden, he gradually becomes her champion and she his supportive confidant.

What a great story! Thea is engaging, endearing, and the picture of self-reliance, despite her tragic childhood, poverty, and manipulative alcoholic mother. With her eye always on the prize of earning her high school diploma, she overcomes so much that is stacked against her at the time, when girls were expected to leave school early, marry, and start a family.

Dr. Hallam has his own struggles. A quietly private man, his personal story is revealed only a little at a time, and what a surprising and sad one it turns out to be. But he, too, perseveres, and even gets a second chance, as Thea pushes and encourages and secretly works in the background to help make it happen.

The plot addresses important issues and how they were viewed during that era: women's roles, expectations, and education, Prohibition and drinking, pre-marital sex, and homosexuality. The Oklahoma City setting is unique, and although Thea says the city's population at the time of the story is over 100,000, it feels like a much smaller town. Everyone knows everyone else and all their business, and everyone has an opinion to share about what's going on.

The audiobook narration by Nicole Fikes is absolutely wonderful. Her performance shines with incredibly believable, varied voices for all the speaking characters: young, old, male, female, local, and foreign. The switch between Thea and her mother, who have many conversations together, is amazing. My favorite voice is that of Grace Carter, the mother, with her strong regional accent, wheedling, nagging, and alcoholic mumbling.

I highly recommend THEA to readers and listeners of historical fiction, especially those who enjoy an American midwestern or southern setting during the 1920s.

Breakthrough T1D Dallas Gala Celebrated 30 Years of Impact at A Night of Hope

The Breakthrough T1D Dallas community gathered on Saturday, April 11, at the OMNI Dallas Hotel to celebrate a milestone evening at the 30th Anniversary Gala, A Night of Hope, presented by The Dave and Stacey Johnson Family. The inspiring event brought together more than 600 families, researchers, and supporters united in the mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to treat, prevent, and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Throughout the evening, 33 Breakthrough T1Ds Youth Ambassadors children living with type 1 diabetes and their siblings greeted guests and energized the room as they helped drive donations. Their enthusiasm not only supported the nights fundraising success, but also served as a reminder of the lives directly impacted by every dollar raised.

The evening opened with heartfelt remarks from emcees Karen Borta of CBS 11 and Isaiah Stanback, former Dallas Cowboys player and NFL Network Good Morning Football and CBS 11 sports analyst, both of whom shared their personal connections to T1D as parents. Guests paused for a special tribute honoring the late Josh Pack, a dedicated champion of the organization whose legacy continues to inspire generosity and impact.

This years gala chairs the Johnson family (Stacey and Dave Johnson and their family Chelsea and Blake McMullen, Kendall and Michael Kelly, and Rylie Johnson) helped lead a meaningful celebration that highlighted both the 30-year history of the Dallas Gala and a deeply personal milestone: daughter Chelseas 30th diaversary, marking three decades of living with T1D.

Type 1 diabetes affects not only those of us who live with the disease, but also the families who walk beside us each day, said Chelsea McMullen. While technology has transformed how I manage T1D, I still dream of a day without it a future where my children dont have to face this disease.

David Natinsky, president-elect of the Breakthrough T1D Greater Dallas Board introduced Amy Camp, territory executive director, and Melissa Pinkerton, Dallas chapter director, who recognized key supporters and their hope to keep the momentum going and one day see a world without type 1.

Thirty-one million dollars has been raised in 30 years to fund research, clinical trials, and education, said Camp. And families like the Johnsons have been right alongside us every step of the way driving progress, raising millions, and giving hope to so many.

The program also honored Dr. Perrin White, a nationally recognized leader in pediatric endocrinology whose decades of work have helped transform care for children living with T1D.

Thanks to the efforts of Breakthrough T1D, I not only hope for a cure I know it will come, said Dr. White. At UT Southwestern, we care for 2,500 children living with T1D, and were seeing real progress. Im proud to be part of advancements like teplizumab, the first disease-modifying therapy shown to delay the onset of type 1 diabetes in those at risk. While we work toward a cure, we celebrate each breakthrough that improves lives today and gives families hope for the future.

A highlight of the evening was the Fund A Cure presentation, featuring the Swartwout family and their daughter Harper, who participated in an early clinical trial for the groundbreaking teplizumab therapy.

At such a young age, Harper represents the impact each of us can have in the fight to find a cure, shared her family, emphasizing the importance of screening and clinical trials in advancing research.

Teplizumab therapy is the most meaningful discovery since the 1922 discovery of insulin! exclaimed Harper Swartwout. Her final message captured the spirit of the night: Lets make type 1, type none.

The evening featured a lively auction, generous sponsorship support, and heartfelt moments that underscored the urgency and promise of continued research, with its success driven in part by auction chair Lindsey Verity, whose leadership helped create an engaging and impactful fundraising experience.

Lexie Peterson, community relations & corporate giving coordinator at American Airlines, also known in the diabetes community as The Divabetic a prominent T1D advocate, content creator, and influencer kicked off the live auction experience, with the airline contributing more than 1 million AAdvantage® miles to enhance packages and drive fundraising momentum. As the program concluded and guests took to the dance floor to the music of Manhattan, the message of the evening remained clear: with continued commitment and generosity, a future without type 1 diabetes is within reach.

On Saturday, April 25, for one night only, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra invites audiences to experience Stravinsky X Kendrick Lamar, a boundary-pushing concert at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center that blends Igor Stravinskys Petrouchka with tracks from Kendrick Lamars Pulitzer Prize-winning album DAMN.

Conductor-composer Steve Hackman creates an unexpected musical conversation between two icons separated by a century, weaving themes of identity, struggle, love, fear, and redemption into a single narrative arc. As the DSO performs Stravinskys vibrant, character-driven ballet score, the music seamlessly transitions into Lamars classics like LOYALTY., XXX., and HUMBLE., reimagined through vocalists Ajani NaNaBuluku, Jecorey Arthur, and Khalil Overton, and the additions from the rhythm section by Gabe Globus-Hoenich and Nick Clark.

Network Fork-Off to Fight Hunger takes place this year on Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 6 10 p.m. at the University of Texas at Dallas Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center. Honorary Chairs are Richardson luminaries, Mauri and Bryan Marsh.

Guests will enjoy delicious samplings from local restaurants, dancing, exciting live and silent auctions, interactive activities, and more. King Coyote by Rachael Meyers Jones is a wonderful and exciting summertime coming-of-age story as a pre-teen navigates his parents' impending divorce, loneliness, and a fish-out-of-water stay in rural Vermont. King is twelve years old when he is dropped off for the summer at his cousin's house in Northeast Vermont, while his parents work through the process of separating and setting up two households back home in Boston. When he and Nat were much younger, they had been inseparable: their families even shared a duplex. But when their grandfather had died, Nat's parents had relocated to the family farmstead in Vermont, and the two had not seen each other since. This summer, the cousins are thrust back together and finally have their comfortable relationship restored enough to work through the really big feelings they've both kept tamped down.

King is the engaging main character whose hurt radiates from every pore. It will take the summer and a lot of adventure for him to realize he can't fix the change in his parents' feelings for each other. While reuniting with Nat gives him the sounding board he needs, it is his feeling of responsibility for the small, scraggly coyote he names Coal that eventually pulls him out of his sadness and allows him to gain some perspective.

Intruding on his healing are the awkward encounters with the few white people in the area, who see him as someone to fear because of the color of his skin. His cousin knows what's going on but chooses to look the other way, at first. Nat, the only child of mixed ancestry at her school, had found their attitudes isolating, with most people choosing to ignore her, only seeing her white heritage, while others rudely overstepped basic common boundaries and personal space: a confusing and painful situation for her that her Black father tried to help her understand and overcome. While no answers are found on the teens' adventure into the wilderness, they come away from the experience with more confidence in themselves to handle whatever comes their way in the future.

The description of the Vermont setting and the kids' summertime activities on the mountain are, for the most part, vivid, glorious, and idyllic. Their freedom to roam and relax without cellphones, videogames, and streaming services is a renewal, especially for King, who had much more access to this back in Boston. They gain knowledge, self-reliance, trust, and build resilience from their experiences, but still realize the toll their unexpected and impulsive absence had on their frantic parents.

I recommend KING COYOTE to readers of middle-grade fiction and adventure stories, especially those who enjoy a natural or wilderness setting.

DALLAS PULSE CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH IN THEIR INAUGURAL SEASON

The Dallas PULSE are headed to the postseason in their inaugural season after Dallas (17-6) swept the Omaha Supernovas (11-13) in straight sets on Sunday afternoon, 25-21, 25-21, 25-22. The win marked the PULSEs seventh sweep of the season and added to the momentum of a team that continues to show why it has become one of Major League Volleyballs most dangerous contenders.

I dont think we couldve asked for a better start to the season in our first year as a franchise, said Shannon Winzer, Head Coach for Dallas PULSE. When we first came together as a team, we said the beauty of this year is we have no past, only beginnings, so lets make our mark on the league. And were doing just that. But our job is far from done, so for now we want to celebrate having clinched a spot in finals but stay in the trenches working to get better.

During the Omaha match, Dallas PULSE showed the balance that has made this team so difficult to defend. The PULSE was powered by another standout performance from outside hitters Mimi Colyer and Sofia Maldonado Diaz, who delivered the kind of one-two punch that has become a defining strength for the PULSE all season. Veteran setter Natalia Valentin-Andersons leadership and steady presence helped the PULSE hit .320 for the match, the ninth time this season the team has eclipsed a .300 hitting percentage. Kylie Murr continues to anchor the defense and is one of the leading passers in the MLV.

The 2026 Major League Volleyball Championship will be held on the PULSE home court at Comerica Center in Frisco, on Thursday, May 7 with the title match on Saturday, May 9. The winning team earns a one million dollar bonus to be distributed among its roster. Fans can purchase tickets via the TicketMaster website.

Dallas PULSE returns to Comerica Center on Friday, April 17, to face the Columbus Fury at 7 p.m. CT. Fans can watch the match live on Victory+. Local nonprofit Black Heart Association (BHA) will be onsite at Comerica Center from 3 pm to 6:45 p.m., performing free heart screenings inside their Cardiovascular and Resource Delivery Vehicle (CARDI V). Fun, intriguing start to this healthier culinary-themed cozy mystery series.

Battered is the clever first book in G.P. Gottliebs fun and intriguing Whipped & Sipped Mystery series, and in it, the author serves up a puzzling murder, complex character backstories, and plenty of delicious food talk. With its engaging and relatable main character, I was hooked from page one.

Alene Baron is the new owner of Whipped & Sipped, a bakery café that came with some strings attached: a couple of legacy employees related to the former owner were to be kept on the payroll. However, kindness is Alenes middle name, and she does her best to keep all her coworkers happy, healthy, and working at a job they love. Alene is relatable as a single mom with a pain-in-the-butt ex. She is also at the age where her father, with whom she and her three children live, is starting to show signs of needing a little extra help himself; the lady has got her hands full. The author does a fabulous job introducing not only the main character but also many secondary characters, giving them more than a superficial mention; I really felt like I knew these people.

As the first book in the series, the author does the heavy lifting of not only introducing everyone but also establishing the world where the stories will unfold. Her Chicago setting is vibrant, and those familiar with the area will recognize many of the locations mentioned. Because of the buildup, the murder doesnt occur until well into the book. However, this later development also serves to provide a goodly number of plausible suspects in the victims death whom Alene must eliminate from consideration. By this time, I, too, was quite invested in everyone and in Alenes efforts, and read the entire book through before I knew it. I couldnt quit until I found out the final resolution.

I recommend BATTERED to cozy mystery readers who enjoy culinary-themed plots.

Where Art Meets Architecture

What began as a simple idea from a former Dallas Academy student grew into a wonderful opportunity for five Dallas Academy students to showcase their creativity beyond the classroom. The conceptinviting students to submit artwork to a juried competitionwas shared from a past alumnus with Head of School and quickly brought to life by art teacher Tammy Gore. That spark led Dallas Academy students to participate in The Art of Architecture, a citywide competition hosted by the Architecture and Design Exchange in downtown Dallas.

Open to middle and high school students, the competition challenges young artists to explore the creative side of architecture and create artwork through mediums like sculpture, printmaking, painting, mixed media, drawing and photography. Dallas Academy students Kassandra G. and Keith V. B. created their own architectural paper sculpture, demonstrating technical precision. Brooke G., Josh B., and Lou H. crafted detailed printmaking pieces inspired by their own homes, blending personal perspective with architectural study.

Through this experience, students not only expanded their artistic skills but also engaged with the broader design communitygaining the chance to have their work displayed publicly at the Architecture and Design Exchange May 5 June 6.

Moments like these allow the ideas of past students to pave the way for current students, giving them the opportunity to express themselves and pursue new opportunities.
