Pudge Rodríguez to Headline the 2020 Sewell Golf Classic Benefiting Buckner

In its 18th year, the Sewell Golf Classic is making some big changes, including the addition of Hall of Fame baseball player Iván "Pudge" Rodríguez. The annual charity tournament will also move to the Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club in Las Colinas in order to accommodate even more golfers. All the proceeds continue to benefit vulnerable children and families in North Texas served by Buckner Children and Family Services, part of nonprofit Buckner International.

Scheduled for Oct. 19, 2020, the Sewell Golf Classic’s format remains a four-person scramble with shotgun start times at 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Moving to the Four Seasons allows the tournament to expand to 360 golfers, compared to 240 the previous year.

Rodríguez will play 18 holes in the morning round as part of a foursome and participate in a Q&A during the lunch break. The opportunity to join him is available to three people through the tournament’s top sponsorship.

“I am looking forward to playing a round of golf at the Sewell Golf Classic, knowing that all the proceeds will benefit one of our community’s leading nonprofits, Buckner International, and its mission to serve vulnerable children and families,” said Rodríguez.

All participating golfers in the Sewell Golf Classic will receive access to the Four Season’s spa for the day. Lunch will be provided between the morning and afternoon rounds, and a brief awards presentation will follow the conclusion of each round.

“We are excited to announce that Pudge Rodríguez is the first golfer signed up for this year’s Sewell Golf Classic,” said Arnie Adkison, chief development officer for Buckner International. “His presence is the perfect way to kick off our new location at the Four Seasons and to quickly fill up those remaining 359 spots.

“Sewell’s leadership and support through this tournament has been instrumental in helping thousands of children and families in the DFW area each year, and our new location will allow for even more involvement and a greater impact.”

Buckner Children and Family Services offers a wide variety of services to children, families and single parents in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with the goal of building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life and fulfill their God-given potential. The programs impacted by the tournament include Buckner Foster Care and Adoption, Buckner Family Pathways, Buckner NextStep, and three Dallas-area Buckner Family Hope Centers.

In 2019, the impact of Buckner in North Texas included helping 38 single parents pursue higher education, while providing safe and affordable housing through Buckner Family Pathways; caring for 217 children in foster care, finding forever homes for 27 children through adoption, and strengthening the families of more than 12,500 parents and children through family coaching and programming offered at the Buckner Family Hope Centers.

Sewell has sponsored the golf tournament for Buckner since 2002, but the tournament dates back 25 years to 1995. For the previous 14 years, the tournament was located at the Bent Tree Country Club.
