Nov. 6, 2014 -- PLANO, TX — Today Prestonwood Christian Academy (PCA) sent more than 800 students and faculty members out across the Metroplex to serve during the 12th annual PCA Service Day.
“PCA Service Day is one of the highlights of our fall as our seventh through twelfth graders and faculty members serve others across our North Texas community,” said Dr. Larry Taylor, PCA Head of School. “When we serve we are honoring what our Lord challenged His disciples to do after He washed their feet. He told them, ‘I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.’ We want our students to understand that the community, and the world, is a classroom opportunity to learn, serve and invest into others.”
The more than 800 students and faculty members served multiple communities in a myriad of ways. Service projects included work such as building a house with Habitat of Garland, assisting and cheering during the Special Olympics event at USA Bowl, assisting teachers in classrooms and on the playground at Crossover Mi Escuelita Preschool, organizing donations and cleaning at Union Gospel Mission Thrift Shop, playing Bingo with special needs adults at Citizens Development Center and much more at 26 total locations.
PCA Junior and Upper School Chaplain, Carter Gekiere has participated in five PCA Service Days, and it is a day to which she always looks forward. “My favorite part about service project day is that I get to see my fellow classmates taking time out of the normal day and serving other people,” said Gekiere. “PCA constantly brings up the phrase ‘servant leadership,’ and I think that PCA Service Day is a time that we can see that being put into action and practice by our student body.”
Service work is one of the core values at Prestonwood Christian Academy, and in addition to today’s day of service, the Upper School also participates in “Minimester” during a week in the spring when students choose to go on mission trips locally, nationally or abroad. These events have created a culture of servant hearts among the student body.
“Christ came to serve, not to be served,” said junior Jordan Salim. “PCA puts a lot of emphasis on teaching us to be servant leaders, and we enjoy building unity amongst our peers while serving those in need both here and around the world.”
Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano has more than 1,500 students enrolled in Pre-K3 through twelfth grade.
